Bowie Composite Squadron Selected for CAP's New Squadron Expansion Program
The Bowie Composite Squadron is one of six Civil Air Patrol squadrons nationwide selected for a program to expand squadrons in underrepresented, under-resourced, and underserved communities.
Through the U.S. Air Force-funded initiative, selected squadrons will receive materials to support various activities, from color guard to STEM education. The program offers essential supplies, including parade rifles, belts, gloves, and flags, allowing cadets to train for and participate in community activities as part of their color guard. Additionally, the program will provide the squadron with rank insignias, ribbons, boots, and uniforms for incoming cadets.
The program emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, offering two options for squadrons to help cadets earn a STEM Badge. The first option includes a fleet of three to five mini-drones with storage containers and spare batteries to help cadets get started with drone flight training. The second option provides 10 to 15 Sphero programmable robots and storage containers to promote robotics education.
"The members of the Bowie Composite will really appreciate participating in the new Squadron Expansion Program," said Bowie Composite Squadron Commander, Lt. Col. Henry Waller. "This program provides resources that will help our cadets accomplish several important goals that they have set for themselves, including color guard, drone flight training, and robotics," he said.
The program also includes a fully funded challenge activity near each participating squadron to further support teamwork, build camaraderie, and enhance the cadet experience. In coordination with region and wing commanders, CAP's national headquarters selected participating squadrons based on their potential for growth.
